Currency Exchange

Only U.S. dollars can be exchanged with any degree of ease in Honduras. Most other currencies, even from bordering economies, will generate a bureaucratic nightmare. (In Tegucigalpa, Lloyd's Bank will change British, Canadian, and German currencies.) U.S. dollars receive a better rate than traveler's checks..

Traveler's Checks and Credit Cards

Visitors to Honduras are advised to take traveler's checks in U.S. dollars. Travelers' checks are often difficult to change in Haiti, but credit cards are widely accepted and some establishments accept or cash personal checks. Traveler's checks can be exchanged at banks, exchange shops, hotels, and international airports at various tourist exchange rates. Larger banks may offer the best exchange rates. Black marketers only offer slightly better rates, and they should be avoided. Banks in rural areas rarely deal with traveler's checks so bring cash.

Visa and MasterCard are easily accepted in good hotels and restaurants but not always at the same exchange rate as cash. Other credit cards will not be accepted. Some banks in the capital and Credomatic offices offer cash advances on credit cards but make sure you bring your passport. ATMs are rare even in the capital.
